Open letter to VDL on EU legislative framework for sustainable food systems and the future of food

During her State of the Union address, President Ursula von der Leyen announced the European Commission’s plan to initiate a strategic dialogue on the future of EU agriculture as a means to achieve the goals of the European Green Deal.

Scientists and academics agree that the European Union cannot achieve its sustainability goals without transforming its food systems. However, the European Commission’s work program, presented last week to the European Parliament. lacked a law on sustainable food systems.

A transition to more sustainable, healthier, and affordable diets is not only something that has been promised to EU citizens, but is also critical to combating climate change.

That’s why, together with 126 scientists, academics, and NGOs, we’ve signed this open letter by the Food Policy Coalition which denounce the absence from the 2024 work program of the Sustainable Food Systems Framework (FSFS)-a key dossier of the EU’s Green Deal-asking it to implement the FSFS in this mandate as well. The letter also outlines the priorities that must be met for the announced “strategic dialogue on the future of agriculture” to be fruitful.

Smile City brings to Rome the European workshop on sustainable urban design: co-creating the off-grid e-bike charging station of the future

On 3 December, Rome will host an event dedicated to urban innovation: the Urban Living Lab Workshop of the European project Smile City, which is testing new circular solutions for sustainable mobility. Can Art Restoration Be Sustainable? A New Environmental Protocol Says Yes

A new scientific study published in the journal Heritage introduces, for the first time, a method to measure the environmental impact of materials used in the restoration of canvas paintings. Using Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA), the research identifies which phases — such as varnish removal or the use of solvents and biocides — have the greatest impact in terms of emissions, toxicity and resource consumption. The protocol, developed with the contribution of Fondazione Ecosistemi, shows that restoration can become more sustainable without compromising quality: it only requires more informed choices in materials, techniques and waste management.
